The SEAoNY Sustainable Design Committee and Small Practice Engineering Committee (SPEC) present: Passive House 101 for Structural EngineersJohn Loercher from Phius (Passive House institute of US) will present an entry level introduction of passive house standards/certifications catered towards structural detailing and logistics. This event will cover:

  1. The basic principles of passive building design including superinsulation, air tightness, window optimization and minimized mechanical systems
  2. The Phius climate-specific certification standard and the design intent of the program
  3. How to maintain insulation continuity in structural details through case studies and examples
  4. Building envelope assemblies and structural systems that are useful in passive building design
  5. The certification process, building a team and applying for certification

About the speaker: John Loercher is a CPHC trainer and has been part of the Phius certification team since 2021. He provides design review, updates our existing CPHC training curriculum and helps expand the advanced training offerings at Phius. Prior to joining the certification team, John has been an active CPHC since 2016 and has certified all building types ranging from single-family and multi-family residential, commercial, new construction and retrofits.
