SEAoNY Presidents Breakfast and Round Table

“Making a Design a Reality – The working relationship between engineers and contractors”

This round table will be devoted to the relationship between Contractors/engineers and what each can learn from the other.

Moderators will be invited to lead the discussion at each table, including both contractors and engineers with field experience.

This event will take place from 8am to 10am at the Center for Architecture 536 LaGuardia Pl, New York, NY 10012

Registration opens at 7:30am. Seminar begins promptly at 8:00am

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Special Inspections
  • Delegated Design
  • Existing Conditions
  • Means & Methods

Special Inspections: Moderators - Karl Rubenacker (GMS) & Tom Costigan (Cross County Construction)

The round table will include an interactive discussion on the current state of special inspections in building construction. Perspectives from the design engineer and contractor will be presented, as well as a discussion of the latest requirements in the building code. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss:

  • Latest building code requirements for special inspections.
  • How effective are special inspections?
  • Pros and cons of hiring an independent third party special inspector vs. one from the design team.
  • Does the owner benefit from special inspections?

Delegated Design – Steel Connections: Moderators - Allan Paull (Tishman) & Nathan Shuman (McLaren Engineering Group) The round table will include an interactive discussion focused on the pros and cons of delegated design of steel connections. Participants should come prepared to discuss questions on the topic such as:

  • AISC standard code of practice and the Engineer of Record’s responsibilities.
  • Is it more economical for the contractor to design the connections?
  • The roles and responsibilities of the engineer and contractor in the delegated design of steel connections.
  • Current trends with BIM modeling of steel connections sent by the engineer to the contractor.

Existing Conditions and Means & Methods: Moderator - Scott Winikow (Donovan Hatem) & Joseph Regele (Regele Builders) The round table will include an interactive discussion on the topic of existing conditions and the resulting interaction between design engineers and contractors. A review of the definition of “means & methods” will follow, including other grey areas of scope that typically are encountered between engineers and contractors. Participants should come prepared to learn about and discuss questions on the topic such as:

  • How are existing conditions “verified in the field”?
  • What happens when existing conditions are encountered that are different from design documents?
  • What constitutes means & methods?
  • What are some of the grey areas of scope typically encountered?
  • Legal aspects related to existing or unknown conditions.

What can Contractors & Engineers learn from each other? Moderator – Joseph Tortorella (Silman) & Tony Mazzo (Urban Foundations) The round table will include an interactive discussion about the collaboration between engineers and contractors with particular focus on what each other brings to the table. Participants should come prepared to discuss questions on the topic such as:

  • What can a contractor learn from a structural engineer?
  • What can a structural engineer learn from a contractor?
  • How can field issues and RFI’s be limited?
  • Conflict resolution – can’t we all just get along?
